Adventure

With brisk pacing and with a protagonist on a mission, the stories are action based with danger throughout. Settings are very important with stories set in exotic locales. There is always a hero, often male, who accomplishes the mission. Typically, there is a menacing mood and jargon that can be professional or military (Saracks, 2009).

Bacigalupi, Paolo. Ship Breaker. Book 1 in Ship Breaker Series. 2010.

Nailer scavenges copper wiring from oil tankers, but when he finds a ship with a great treasure, he has to decide whether to scavenge the ship, or save the girl aboard. Hiaasen, Carl. Chomp. 2012.

Wahoo Cray lives in a zoo with an animal wrangler father. When their lives get picked up for a reality show, they go on location to the Everglades. After the show’s producer goes missing in a storm and search parties vanish, they must figure out a way to get back home with everyone intact. Seven teenagers return from camping to find that their country has been invaded, and they have to survive and fight. However, Jackie is happy to leave the streets of eighteenth-century London for the high seas to become an excellent sailor. However, “Jacky” disguises the fact that she is a girl and has to keep this secret at all costs. This book will appeal to those who are interested in a historical adventure story with serious themes.
